A point of sale (or POS in abbreviated form) is a phrase used to indicate the point or location at which a sales transaction occurs, such as a checkout line or a retail counter. The point of sale system is a term used in computer hardware and software to actually manage sales transactions.

The traditional computerized point of sale began in the 1970s and matured in the 1990s, using a fixed view of the computer on which the POS software was installed to swipe peripherals such as a receipt printer. The network enables traditional POS to be used with multiple workstations and multiple stores to synchronize information at different locations, making it easier to track sales and inventory
